Engineering where evidence matters.

A curated selection of research-led projects combining laboratory testing, field investigation and responsible engineering judgement.

Seismic isolation · NATO Science for Peace

Pestalozzi School — renewal of the base-isolation system

As project director, Prof. Garevski led the development, testing and installation of 54 new low-cost rubber isolators in the historic Skopje school — the first structure in the world to use rubber bearings for seismic base isolation.

The programme progressed from analysis of the building response and trial production of scaled bearings to verification of rubber compounds, damping close to 10%, full-scale prototype testing and replacement of all 54 original bearings.

Lead structural designer · Skopje

Macedonian National Theatre

Lead structural design of the reconstructed theatre, translating an architecturally demanding historic form into a contemporary earthquake-resistant structural system supported by detailed numerical modelling.

The structural concept reconciled complex architectural geometry, multiple levels and domes with the requirements of contemporary seismic design. The three-dimensional numerical model guided the design through construction.

Post-fire bridge safety · 2023–2025

Belasica Bridge, Skopje

Integrated post-fire assessment through field inspection, material evidence and structural analysis. The resulting paper was selected as Engineering Structures’ 2025 Best Paper of the Year in Earthquake Engineering for Europe.

The assessment combined documentation review, mapped fire damage, non-destructive and destructive material testing, thermal and structural analyses and a full-scale trial load test. Displacements measured in 2023 were practically identical to the original 2005 test, supporting reopening without unnecessary strengthening.

Post-fire assessment · Skopje

Universal Hall steel dome

Expert assessment of fire effects on the large-span steel dome, combining visual classification, sampling and laboratory testing of characteristic fire-exposed steel profiles.

The investigation followed the complete evidence chain: the fire event, inspection from lifting platforms, classification of heat-affected members, sampling of representative steel profiles and laboratory tensile testing of prepared specimens.

Full-scale dynamic testing · 44 storeys

Sky City — forced-vibration investigation

Field testing of Skopje’s tallest residential tower to identify its fundamental periods and corresponding mode shapes, linking experimental dynamics with the behaviour of a completed high-rise structure.

Forced-vibration testing of the 44-storey tower enabled experimental identification of the fundamental periods and corresponding mode shapes, providing an important full-scale reference for high-rise behaviour in Skopje.
